Tips and Tacks: Tree & Shrub Care Tips
Many homeowners believe that their trees and shrubs require little attention after planting, but watering, fertilization, and proper pruning are important to your landscape's investment. Take a few minutes to learn more about your tree and shrub needs by following our helpful tips below.

Fertilizing

Just like any living thing, landscape plants require certain nutrients to grow. Fertilizing trees and shrubs helps supply these nutrients, supplementing those already provided by the soil. Well-fertilized ornamental plants grow more vigorously, look greener and healthier, and produce more flowers. The challenge is selecting the correct fertilizers and applying them at the proper rate and at the right time.

Here are the most common fertilizing errors and their consequences:

Not enough fertilizer
An inadequate fertilizer application will not improve color or growth, nor will it bring out the full potential of the plant.

Too much fertilizer
Fertilizer applied at excess rates is detrimental to plants, and can damage or kill the roots. Above the ground, excess fertilizer shows up as leaf scorch and even branch dieback.

Unevenly applied fertilizer
Fertilizer should be applied to cover as much of the root-growing zone under the plant canopy as possible. If it is misapplied to only a portion of the root zone, the fertilized area could respond differently from the unfertilized areas of the tree or shrub bed.  Since every landscape has different fertilizing needs, request an analysis and estimate for tree and shrub care from the experts at NEA Turf Care & Nursery

Landscape Fertilizer - Bedding Plants

Nearly all bedding plants will benefit from a regular, moderate rate of fertilization during the growing season. However, there are a few kinds of plants, such as impatiens, that seem to produce more green foliage than blooms if heavily fertilized.
